Job Description:

Horry-Georgetown Technical College is seeking candidates for an Adjunct Instructor, Paralegal. 

Paralegal adjunct instructors will teach courses in HGTC’s paralegal program, which is designed to train students with an interest in working in a law firm or governmental organization as well as for those students interested in the general legal field. The instructor will be responsible for preparing and delivering substantive, procedural, and practical application knowledge of legal skills and concepts commonly used in South Carolina law firms and governmental organizations. Paralegal Instructors are required to have experience working in the legal field of the course being taught as well as having experience supervising paralegals in that area.

Teaching Performance:

Develop competency-based instructional materials that meet National Standards and SC DHEC curriculum requirements. Supervise, provide instruction, and evaluate students enrolled in EMS programs. Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate. Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students. Prepare for class by reviewing topic material in the current textbook used by the program. Interact with the appropriate college personnel to accomplish the department's goals and objectives. Promote the college's EMS program, associate degree and other relevant training programs. Facilitate discussion in lab and practical training sessions. Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently. Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances. Solicit feedback from students through instructor evaluations. Maintain appropriate student files. Report student progress to the EMS Program Coordinator and Department Chair. With the Department Chair and the EMS Program Coordinator and other instructors, review, revise, and update program policies and procedures as needed. Maintain appropriate certifications for EMS training and must adhere to all rules, policies and procedures of Horry-Georgetown Technical College and SC DHEC. Oversee labs and assist with lab instruction and testing as needed. Fulfill duties as required of Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Assist the Department Chair and EMS Program Coordinator to maintain accreditations. Provide students with course materials including syllabus, grading/attendance policy, and other relevant information in a timely manner; relate instructional materials, discussions and all course activities to course objectives; demonstrate effective instructional methodology as documented on the class visitation form; use practical examples and illustrations; pace the instruction over the semester; provide students with timely evaluations; provide evaluation results in a timely manner; relate evaluations to course objectives; follow acceptable department and college grading policies.  Assist in the planning process of developing program course outcomes and assessments. 

Student Advisement:

Maintain and publicize required office hours and availability; refer students to other persons for appropriate assistance; maintain appropriate records; meet with students in a timely manner; display sensitivity to students’ needs and problems; advise students appropriately, based on their career plans and academic needs. Ability to coach, mentor, and guide students toward their goals. Must be available days, evenings, and weekends to implement requirements of classes and training as necessary. Ability to learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.

Advertised Salary:

Commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Juris Doctor degree with SC practical experience in the course subject matter, along with experience working with and/or supervising paralegals in that area. The applicant should be in good standing with the SC Bar.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in college-level teaching.
